July 7, 2006 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lake County Captains News Release
(Salisbury, MD)--After losing the first game of Friday's doubleheader at Perdue Stadium, 3-1, the Lake County Captains rebounded to win the second game 3-0, thanks to a complete-game, three-hit shutout by Jim Deters.
The Captains (8-8) used the split to keep within striking distance of the first-place Lakewood BlueClaws, who won 8-3 at Hagerstown. The Captains are three games out of first in the SAL North Division.
Deters (6-6) won his second straight decision against the Shorebirds. The 22-year-old righthander dominated, scattering three hits, all singles. He walked one and struck out one. It was the first complete-game shutout this year for Deters.
Lake County catcher Josh Noviskey stroked a two-run single in the first inning off Chorye Spoone (5-5). Spoone walked the first three hitters of the game to load the bases. He recorded two pop-outs before yielding Noviskey's hit.
Noviskey drove in the other Captains run in the sixth on an RBI groundout to make it 3-0. Noviskey raised his RBI total to 38, which ranks second on the team.
In game one, Delmarva's Brad Bergesen tossed a three-hit complete game, as the Shorebirds won 3-1.
The Shorebirds (5-10) scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning off Captains starter Frank Herrmann (2-3).
The Captains pulled to within 2-1 in the fourth on a double by Juan Valdes and an RBI single by Johnny Drennen. Zach Dillon homered off Julio Pinto in the fifth to extend the lead to 3-1.
Bergesen (3-1) retired the side in order in every inning except the fourth. It was his first complete-game of the season.
The Captains and Shorebirds will continue the series Saturday night at 7:05. Beginning on Tuesday, July 11th, the Captains will return to Classic Park for an eight-game homestand against Greensboro and Hagerstown. For tickets, call (440) 954-WINS or visit captainsbaseball.com.
