CHARLESTON, SC - Taylor Grote's RBI double in the bottom of the 12th drove home Rob Lyerly and completed a six-run comeback, as the Charleston RiverDogs toppled the Lexington Legends, 7-6, in 12 innings in South Atlantic League action Sunday evening in front of 2,855 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, Charleston splits the season-opening series in improving to 2-2, while the Legends drop to 2-2.
The RiverDogs trailed the contest 6-1 into the bottom of the eighth, when they struck for three runs against Wander Alvino to cut the deficit to 6-4. Garrison Lassiter and Emerson Landoni walked to start the frame, and Ray Kruml singled to load the bases. Jimmy Paredes drove a sacrifice fly to left to score Lassiter, and Lyerly's bases-loaded, two-out, two-run single cut it to runs into the ninth.
Charleston would score twice against righty Mike Schurz, after Paredes blooped a single to right to plate Landoni, who doubled with one out. Luke Murton then bounced into a RBI fielder's choice at third to tie the game, but Kyle Higashioka was thrown out at home trying to score on a wild relay throw to send the game to extra innings.
Lexington scored right away off Charleston starter Jose Ramirez, when right fielder Jake Goebbert knocked a single into center, bringing Jose Altuve across the plate from second, after he reached via error. Ramirez, the 20th best prospect in the Yankees system according to Baseball America, lasted 5.0 innings in his SAL debut, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts in the no-decision.
The score was brought to a 1-1 standstill in the fifth, on Landoni's RBI single off Lexington starter Jose Cisnero, who lasted 4.2 innings, allowing only two hits and giving up one run while fanning seven.
Lexington erupted for five runs in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead highlighted by Grant Hogue's two-run triple to right field.
The Legends would threaten no more, as the combined effort of Gabriel Tatis, Ryan Acosta, Ryan Flannery and Francisco Rondon held the final 20 Lexington batters without a base hit after the sixth inning.
Charleston reached double-digit hits for the second straight game with 12 knocks led by Landoni's 3-for-4 performance with a pair of doubles, and two hits each from Kruml, Lyerly, Murton and Grote. Lexington was paced by a pair of hits from Hogue and Goebbert.
