Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Greensboro, NC - In search of their first series sweep of the year, the Augusta GreenJackets fell short on Sunday in a series finale loss to the Greensboro Grasshoppers by a 6-3 margin at NewBridge Bank Park.
2009 first-round draft pick Zach Wheeler struggled to find the strike zone in his first professional outing, walking three and falling behind to all six hitters he faced. Wheeler (0-1) allowed three runs in just a third of an inning with a strikeout.
Kyle Jensen's RBI single was the lone hit allowed by Wheeler and brought home two of Greensboro's three first-inning runs. The Hoppers added two more in the second on a solo home run by Marcell Ozuna and an RBI single by Rand Smith.
Augusta picked up a run of their own in the first on a Ryan Lollis groundout and then began to chip away at what was a four-run deficit. John Eshleman's fourth inning single brought in a run, but the Jackets couldn't capitalize - leaving the bases loaded to end the inning. Hector Sanchez's groundout in the fifth yielded another tally, but the GreenJackets left yet another runner on third at the close of that inning.
Terrence Dayleg's single brought in an insurance run for the Grasshoppers in the ninth to preserve the win for Bryan Evans (1-0). He fired 3.2 innings of one-run ball for the Hoppers, allowing just one hit and walking two with four strikeouts.
The Jackets had a chance to tie the game in the ninth as Evan Crawford and Dan Cook singled to bring Tommy Joseph to the place with two outs as the tying run. Joseph flew out to right to end the game and seal the first save of the season for AJ Ramos.
After taking three of four from the Grasshoppers, the Jackets will move on to Savannah for four with the Sand Gnats. Augusta sends Kyle Vazquez to the mound to battle Taylor Whitenton in a matchup of righties. First pitch will come at 7:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 on WRDW-AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
