Hickory Crawdads News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - After escaping a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, the Hickory Crawdads topped the Hagerstown Suns, 5-2, in 10 frames on Sunday afternoon before of 1,141 fans at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown.
The first-place 'Dads (3-1) put a tally on the board in the first inning when CF Cody Podraza ripped a lead-off double to left, moved up to third on a groundout by SS Leury Garcia, and came in to score on 3B Matt West's groundout to third.
The Suns (1-3) responded right away in the bottom of the second, SS Francisco Soriano scored on a 3B Steven Souza single and RF Miguel Velazquez throwing error. Souza ended up at third on the play, before scoring when 1B Justin Bloxom grounded out to short, putting the Suns ahead, 2-1.
Hickory tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth. C Zach Zaneski led the inning off with a double, moved to third on a single by 2B Joe Bonadonna, and scored on a sac fly by Leury Garcia.
Crawdads starter RHP Matt Thompson struck out seven in five innings, before being relieved by RHP Trevor Hurley, who pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts.
The Crawdads had a rally going in the eighth, but with Podraza at third, Velazquez flied to shallow right field. Podraza attempted to tag and score, but was thrown out at the plate by RF Marcus Jones to end the inning and keep the 2-2 tie intact.
Hickory RHP Kyle Ocampo (1-0, 0.00 ERA) entered the game to start the bottom of the ninth. The first two Suns reached on a bunt single and a double, and then the Cradwads intentionally walked LF J.P. Ramirez to load the bases. Ocampo then dug in, struck out the next two batters and induced a fly ball to left-center, which LF Cristian Santana snagged with a diving catch, escaping the jam and forcing extra innings.
Hickory then exploded for three runs against RHP Shane Erb (0-1, 27.00 ERA) in the top of the 10th to take the lead. With one out and runners on the corners, SS Leury Garcia belted a two-run triple to left-center, plating C Zach Zaneski from third and CF Cody Podraza all the way from first, making it 4-2. With the two-run triple, the 'Dads also eclipsed the 10,000 RBI mark all-time. West followed with an RBI double to bring in Garcia, and the Crawdads carried a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 10th.
RHP Josh Lueke entered the game and closed out the 5-2 win with a scoreless frame. Ocampo registered the win and Lueke logged his first save of the season, while Erb was tagged with the loss for Hagerstown.
