Series: Shorebirds Lead 2-1

Starting Pitcher: Jesse Beal

LAST SEASON IN BLUEFIELD: Beal was up and down during his season in Bluefield last year. A perfect indication of that is his final numbers in July (2-2, 2.72) compared to August (2-2, 5.20). His best outing came on July 3rd against the Pulaski Mariners. In seven innings, he allowed only two hits and one run. Showed excellent command of his pitches. Beal walked just one batter in his final four starts (24.1 innings). Right-handed hitters batted .324 against Beal, while lefties hit just .183 against him.

SIGNED TO PLAY AT MARYLAND: Prior to being drafted by the Orioles in the 14th round, Jesse Beal had a scholarship waiting to play for then University of Maryland head coach Terry Rupp.

11TH BEST IN VIRGINIA: Beal was rated as the 11th best prospect in the state of Virginia by IMPACT coming out of high school.

SOUTH COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL: Went 8-4 with a 3.07 ERA with 70 strikeouts in his junior year of high school. Northern Region Second Team performer as a senior. Struck out 12 batters in the first round of the AAA Northern Region tournament in a win over the Madison Warhawks.

FIRST PROFESSIONAL HOME RUN: It took Justin Dalles 51 games to record his first professional home run as he cranked an Anatanear Batista pitch over the 30 foot fence in dead center field last night. Dalles did not homer in 48 games for the Ironbirds last season. Dalles hit 15 home runs at South Carolina in 2009.

MORE POWER THIS YEAR? For some perspective, it took last year's Shorebirds team 13 games to hit its second team home run. This year's team has two long balls after three games.

7 of LAST 9 ABs: Shorebirds lead off hitter T.J. Baxter has reached base in 7 of his last nine at-bats over the last two games. Last night, he went 3-3 with two runs and a walk. He leads the team with five walks, three stolen bases, four runs scored and an on-base percentage of .643.

GARABEZ ROSA OFF TO SLOW START: It's been a rough three games for Shorebirds shortstop Garabez Rosa. He is 1-12 on the season with two strikeouts. Rosa hit .218 in 64 games for the Ironbirds last season.

24 GAMES IN 24 DAYS: The Shorebirds open the 2010 season with 24 games in 24 days. The first off day of the season isn't until May 2nd. The Shorebirds also have a stretch from early May into June where they play on 28 straight days.
