Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs begin an eight-game homestand Monday, June 26, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park by hosting the Columbus Catfish (Los Angeles Dodgers). Prior to the start of the 7:05 contest, former Porter-Gaud School standout and current Baltimore Raven Ovie Mughelli will be on hand to throw out a ceremonial first pitch.
Born in Boston, Ovie was raised in Charleston, where he was brought up with the idea that education is the key to making a difference in ones life. His parents, Dr. Olomide and Agnes Mughelli who came to America from Nigeria, instilled this thought in their children, and taught them to use education as a tool.
A member of the Porter-Gaud School Hall of Fame, Mughelli rushed for more than 4,500 yards and scored 69 touchdowns during his prep career. He was named South Carolina player of the year and earned All-Conference honors three times. Mughelli led the Porter-Gaud School to a state title in 1996 and state runner-up finish in his senior year of 1997.
Following high school, Mughelli went on to play football at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. As a Deamon Deacon, he started in 33 games and appeared in a total of 44 games earning second-team All-America honors as well as being an All-Atlantic Coast Conference 1st-team selection at fullback by The NFL Draft Report. As a senior, he scored 12 touchdowns, ranking third all-time in the Wake Forest record books for touchdowns scored in a single season.
Mughelli is entering his 4th season with the Baltimore Ravens in the National Football League. Mughelli was considered the top fullback in the 2003 draft. He was selected in the 4th Round (134 Overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft in by the Baltimore Ravens. Mughelli saw action in 6 games as a rookie in 2003 and appeared in 3 in 2004 before being placed on the injured reserve with a hamstring injury. This past season he played in 13 games for the Ravens.
Monday's game is set for a 7:05 first pitch and is presented by 98X.
