Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ROME, GA. - Second baseman Kyle Gray roped a pair of extra base hits, including a two-run scoring double in the fifth that would prove to be the difference in the game as the RiverDogs hung on 5-4 to top the Braves and shake their four-game losing streak on Tuesday night at State Mutual Stadium.
After the RiverDogs (39-37, 2-4) were scored on first for the fifth straight game, Gray got the offense started in the second with a one out triple and scored on the next pitch, when designated hitter Frederick Cuevas doubled down the line in left to pull the game even. After third baseman Welfrin Mateo lined out to left, left fielder Matt Pita stepped up and lined the first pitch he saw from Braves (33-42, 3-3) starter Jose Olague (5-6) into left field to give the Dogs a 2-1 advantage.
Rome quickly tied it up in the bottom of the second inning, getting to Luis Gil (3-3) for a second time. Coming off a 3-for-3, six RBI game the night before, first baseman Griffin Benson singled into left before advancing on a wild pitch and a ground out and scoring on a balk charged to the RiverDogs starter. Gil's base hit allowed to Benson was the only hit he yielded over the first two innings, but a trio of wild pitches and the balk helped the Braves push two across against him.
Charleston pulled ahead for good in the fourth, when for the second time Pita stepped out with two outs and a runner in scoring position and delivered with a first pitch swing, this time giving the RiverDogs a 3-2 lead.
After Gray's two-run double in the fifth, Rome chipped away with tallies in the sixth and eighth. Shortstop Braden Shewmake doubled and came around to score in the sixth on Benson's RBI ground out. The 23rd overall pick by the Braves from just three weeks ago out of Texas A&M led off the eighth inning with his first professional home run, depositing a 2-0 offering from Dalton Lehnen onto the right field berm to pull Rome within a run.
Gil settled in after the two early runs, finishing with a quality start and three runs allowed over six innings and nine strikeouts. The righty fireballer's ERA rose to 2.06 after he had entered play with a 1.81 mark that ranked fourth in the league. The 21-year-old has now struck out at least eight batters in three straight starts, the second-longest stretch of 8+ punchout performances for the Yankee prospect this year.
In the ninth, Lehnen was lifted by manager Julio Mosquera for Jefry Valdez, who gave up an infield dribbler to Justin Dean before retiring Greg Cullen on a groundout to leave the tying and winning runs stranded for his first save.
Upcoming
Charleston wraps up their weeklong road trip to start the second-half on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. from State Mutual Stadium. The RiverDogs will throw righty Harold Cortijo (2-0, 2.25) in the finale. The Puerto Rican born hurler has allowed just one run in each of his last two starts, including turning in six innings his last time out on Thursday night to garner the win in Hickory. Right-hander Odalvi Javier (2-4, 4.44) gets the ball for the Braves; the Dominican Republic hurler gave up a season-high six runs in his last start, going five innings his last time out on Friday night against Hagerstown. The Rome starter has given up three or more runs in three of his last four starts and has given the Braves at least five innings in nine consecutive starts.
