Tostado's Home Run, Tona's 12th Save, Help Jackets Win 4-2

June 25, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release

NORTH AUGUSTA, SOUTH CAROLINA: For the 2nd consecutive night, the Augusta GreenJackets (39-35, 3-3) scored in the 1st inning and rolled to a 4-2 win over the Asheville Tourists (31-45, 2-4). The Jackets take the series and will look to come back tomorrow and earn a series sweep.

The GreenJackets offense came out swinging in the 1st inning for the 2nd consecutive night. After Shane Matheny had a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 GreenJackets, it was Frankie Tostado with a two-run home run to extend the Augusta lead to 3-0. It was Tostado's 11th home run of 2019.

With the Jackets leading 3-0, they tacked on another run in the 2nd inning. This time it was Mikey Edie who picked up the RBI on a double and the Jackets had a 4-0 advantage. Asheville had a response off GreenJackets starter Gregory Santos in the 3rd inning on a passed ball. It was the only run he allowed, and it was unearned as the right-hander tossed four-innings of baseball.

With the Jackets leading 4-1, Asheville added a run in the 6th when Grant Lavigne hit into a fielder's choice to cut the Jackets lead to 4-2. Jesus Tona came out of the GreenJackets bullpen and got the last six outs to earn his 12 save of the season for the Jackets.

Player of the Game: Jesus Tona, SV, 2.0 IP, 0 H, 4 K

Jesus Tona has not allowed a run in his last 11-innings on the mound, and during that stretch, he has given up just two hits. The All-Star closer picked-up his 12th save of 2019 last night to help the GreenJackets win the series over Asheville.

Tomorrow's Game: 7:05 PM vs Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies), SRP Park, North Augusta, South Carolina

Pitching Matchup: (ASH) LHP Colten Schmidt (2-3, 1.64 ERA) vs (AUG) RHP Blake Rivera (4-5, 3.90 ERA)

In what should be one of the best pitching matchups of the homestand, Blake Rivera will toe the rubber in the series finale with Asheville. Rivera has been great this season, despite struggling in his last outing. The right-hander has thrown in 60 innings this year and he has 74 strikeouts to only 34 walks. Rivera was a 4th round pick by the San Francisco Giants in 2018. He was selected by the Giants in 2017 in the 32nd round, but decided not to sign. He went back to Wallace State Community College for one more season before the Giants selected him again.

Colten Schmidt has been dominant on the mound this season for Asheville, and the Jackets saw why when the left-hander faced Augusta on June 5th, and he dazzled by pitching 5.1-innings of scoreless baseball. He also had six strikeouts that evening. Schmidt was drafted by the Rockies in the 23rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft from Louisiana-Lafayette. This season he has 65 strikeouts to only nine walks.
