Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - There were 2,879 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park for Thursday night's South Atlantic League matchup between the RiverDogs and the West Virginia Power. They witnessed a ballgame that they will not soon forget.
The RiverDogs (10-3) came back from a 6-0 deficit, in a game that saw them turn a triple play and hit a grand slam, to defeat the Power (5-9) 9-8. The victory extended Charleston's winning streak to 5 games and was their 7thwin in their last 8.
West Virginia, sparked by a leadoff triple by Greg Polanco (2-4, RBI, run scored), jumped out to 5-0 lead in the second inning, sending 11 men to the plate in the frame and knocking starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell out of the game. Four Charleston errors in the inning resulted in only two of the runs being earned. Another run in the third made the score 6-0, but the Power would've had more if it wasn't for an amazing defensive play by the RiverDogs. With the bases loaded and nobody out, West Virginia's Jodaneli Carvajal hit a line drive to Cito Culver, who caught it for out number one, stepped on second for out number two, and the ball then went from Culver to first baseman Casey Stevenson to catcher Gary Sanchez to third baseman Anderson Feliz, who stepped on third to complete the 6-3-2-5 triple play.
The RiverDogs made their comeback in the fifth with a big inning of their own. With one out, three straight singles loaded the bases for Angelo Gumbs (2-4, 5 RBIs, run scored), who promptly cranked one over the left field wall to cut the deficit to just two runs. Charleston tied the game later in the inning when Tyler Austin hit an RBI double and came around to score on an error.
After West Virginia went ahead again with a run in the 6th, the RiverDogs immediately re-tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Gary Sanchez.
Two innings later, the RiverDogs took their first lead of the game. Stevenson led off the 8th with a triple off Power pitcher Jordan Cooper (0-1) and following walk and a steal by Feliz, Mason Williams and Gumbs hit back-to-back sacrifice flies that made the score 9-7 heading into the ninth. Pedro Guerra (1-0) allowed one run in the ninth, but struck out Jonathan Schwind to put an end to a wild night of baseball at The Joe.
