Legends Take Series Opener in Kannapolis

(KANNAPOLIS, N.C.) Nick Tropeano pitched eight scoreless innings and Roberto Pena delivered a two-run double with two outs in the top of the ninth as the Lexington Legends shut out the Kannapolis Intimidators 2-0 Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series.

Tropeano (1-0) allowed four hits, walked two batters and struck out nine in getting his first victory of the year. For the season, he has struck out a South Atlantic League-leading 27 batters in 19 innings pitched, and his ERA stands at 0.47.

Kannapolis starter Scott Snodgress matched Tropeano for seven shutout innings, and reliever Stew Brase pitched a scoreless eighth for the Intimidators.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Brase walked Matt Duffy. Tyler Burnett popped out for the second out, but Alex Todd singled, his third hit of the game, moving Duffy to second. Pena then hit a fly ball that dropped in fair territory near the right field line, scoring both runners.

Jason Chowning struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn his second save. Brase (0-1) took the loss.

The two teams meet again Friday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
