Asheville Tourists News Release
The Asheville Tourists erased an early 2-0 deficit to win their sixth in a row; 10-6 over the Rome Braves Thursday night. During the Tourists winning streak, the offense has combined for 67 runs. Asheville is also 9-1 in their last 10 games.
Dan Winkler (2-1, 9.00) took the win for the home team, going 5.1 innings. Winkler struggled a bit in the first, but he settled into a groove before leaving in the sixth. Kyle Kubitza doubled in Tony Mueller to begin the scoring. The night was just getting started for the Braves designated hitter as he later scored in the first on Edison Sanchez's sacrifice fly.
Asheville answered off Carlos Perez (0-2, 12.27) in the third. Rosell Herrera led off the inning with a single, the Tourists first hit of the game, and he scored from third on a Brian Humphries single to right. Two batters later Harold Riggins put the Tourists in front for good. Asheville's first-baseman clubbed his second Home Run of the season; a two-run blast over the scoreboard in right-center.
The Tourists kept their foot on the gas in the fourth inning. After Perez retired the first batter, the next eight Tourists hitters reached base. Trevor Story and Ryan Casteel hit back-to-back singles. Herrera and Delta Cleary Jr. drew back-to-back walks with Cleary Jr.'s forcing in a run. Humphries then drove in a pair with a single to center. Sam Mende followed with a single, chasing Perez from the game.
After Riggins was hit by a pitch from reliever Wilson Rivera, David Kandilas knocked in two more, giving Asheville a six-run frame. The Tourists have scored at least six runs in one inning in each of their last four games.
Rome battled back with two in the fifth and then added two more in the seventh. In the fifth, Kubitza doubled with one out and scored on Sanchez's double off the wall. Brandon Drury drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center. The seventh inning featured Kubitza again. He doubled home Elmer Reyes and scored on a Drury single. Kubitza finished 4-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored, two RBI's, a walk, and a stolen base.
The Tourists did manage to plate one more in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out RBI single to right by Herrera. Asheville's bullpen was strong in the late innings and even forced Drury to ground into a game ending double-play.
Even on a cool night with the wind blowing in at McCormick Field, the two teams combined for 16 runs on 20 hits. Asheville and Rome are back at it again Friday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
