Grasshoppers Walk off with 8-7 Win in Game One

Salisbury, Md. - The Greensboro Grasshoppers (10-5) scored the tying run in the ninth inning and defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds (9-6) in walk off fashion in the tenth inning, 8-7 at NewBridge Bank Park on Thursday night.

The Shorebirds jumped to an early lead in the first inning. Glynn Davis reached on an error by shortstop Terrence Dayleg. With one out, Jason Esposito and Gabriel Lino both walked. Brenden Webb followed with a two-run single to right-center field.

The Grasshoppers responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. Ryan Goetz drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ryan Rieger was then hit by a pitch. Josh Adams followed with an RBI double. Aaron Senne hit an RBI single to knot the game at 2-2.

In the second, Mychal Givens blasted a solo home run over the left-center field wall to give the Shorebirds a 3-2 lead. It was his first South Atlantic League home run. Givens played in 57 games for the Shorebirds last season.

Greensboro took the lead in the second with three runs. Three singles in a row and a double by Brent Keys produced the runs.

The Grasshoppers tallied a run in the third inning on single into center by Wilfredo Gimenez to build a 6-3 lead.

The Shorebirds cut into the deficit in the fifth inning. Esposito led off with his third walk of the game. Two wild pitches advanced Esposito to third and Lino followed with a single to shallow center to cut the deficit to 6-4.

In the seventh, the Shorebirds scored three runs to take the lead. Ruettiger set the table with a double that carried over the head of right field James Wooster. With runners at first and third, Lino hit a double down the left field line to score Ruettiger. After a pitching change, Connor Narron hit a two-run double to the left-center field warning track to score two runs and give the Shorebirds a 7-6 lead.

Greensboro tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Brent Keys reached on a one out walk. Keys stole second and third and scored on an RBI single by Ryan Rieger.

In the tenth, Austin Barnes pulled a single to left field off Jose Nivar to score Terrence Dayleg to give the Grasshoppers the win.

Zach Davies faced just one batter over the minimum in five innings of relief. He allowed just four hits and one run.

Shorebirds starter Parker Bridwell lasted four innings and allowed nine hits and six runs.

The Shorebirds play game two of the series on Friday night at 7:00pm. RHP Tyler Wilson is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
