River Otters Sweep UHL Weekly Awards

October 25, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Missouri River Otters News Release

The Missouri River Otters of the United Hockey League are proud to announce that Jason Tapp has been named UHL goalie of the week and Jim Montgomery has been named UHL player of the week.

The team won all three games last week, and both Tapp and Montgomery were a large part of those victories.

Montgomery, 35, scored four goals and seven points in the Otters three games. On Friday night he tied a franchise record with five points against the Rockford Icehogs, including a highlight reel goal where he skated around three players and beat their goalie with a tremendous move. Two nights later against Motor City he scored a goal and added an assist. The lightning quick center scored the game winning goal in both of those games, and was a plus-six rating for the weekend.

"This is a tremendous honor," said Montgomery, who has played 130 games in the NHL. "I have to thank my linemates Glenn Detulleo and Justin Quenneville. They're both very intelligent, hard working players that really make my job easier. I'm thrilled the team is coming together and I think it could be a very special season."

Tapp, 26, went 3-0-0 last weekend with two shutouts, a 1.00 goals-against-average, and a 0.957 save percentage. Perhaps most impressively, his two consecutive shutouts tie him with Brian Regan for the franchise record. He made 28 saves against the Icehogs on Friday in a 5-3 victory, and followed that with a 23-save shutout against Quad City and a 16-save shutout against Motor City.

"It's always nice to win these awards, especially since there are so many great goalies in this league," said Tapp, who has nine career shutouts in 92 professional games. "My success is indicative of how well the team played last weekend. When you're playing with great players like we have here it is easy to get the job done."

The River Otters next game is Friday, October 29 against the Quad City Mallards at the Family Arena. The game starts at 7:05 and can be heard on ESPN 1380-AM. The Otters then head to Fort Wayne to take on the Komets at 7:30 Saturday, and all the action for that game can be heard on KSLQ-FM 104.5 or on the official B2 Otters webcast.
