West Sacramento, Calif. - The family of Vicki Kockinis McDermott and the Sacramento River Cats will present the second annual "V Award" to the top female high school athlete from the Sacramento area in a pre-game ceremony at Raley Field before the team's 7:05 game against the Tacoma Rainiers on Saturday, June 14. The award will honor McDermott, who passed away on February 8, 2007 from complications of cancer at age 53.

The winner of The Vicki Kockinis McDermott Memorial Award - "The V Award" - will have a donation of $2,500 made in her name to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and will be presented a specially designed commemorative award during a pre-game ceremony at Raley Field. Last year's winner was Oak Ridge High School track and cross county runner Alex Kosinski.

This year's nominees include Davis High School Division-1 Cross Country state champion Laurynne Chetelat, Vanden High School Tennis two-time section champion Ariel Lewis, Nevada Union High School Volleyball two-time Player of the Year Sarah McAtee, Christian Brothers High School Basketball player of the year and Volleyball star Brittany Woodard and Sheldon High School Softball standout Jolene Henderson.

The winner will be selected by 12 members of the McDermott and Kockinis families. The nominees were chosen based on exceptional reputation as athletes and teammates and their commitment to family and local community.

McDermott, an Elk Grove native, was a remarkable athlete and the first female inductee to the Sacramento Softball Association Hall of Fame. She played both softball and basketball at Sacramento State and was well-known as a gifted track and field competitor.

"The V Award has been created to keep Vicki's spirit alive and to let everyone in the community know what a special woman and athlete she truly was," said Mark McDermott, her husband. "Vicki felt it was important to recognize the importance of girls' athletics, particularly at the high school level, and those outstanding individuals who compete. We hope that the donation to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation will help in trying to find a cure for this deadly disease."

Tax-deductible contributions to multiple myeloma research can be made payable to the River Cats Foundation Inc.: Vicki Fund and sent to Dan Vistica, 400 Ballpark Drive, West Sacramento, CA 95691.

"The V Award is an appropriate way for the McDermott and Kockinis families to honor the memory of Vicki," said Vistica, the River Cats' senior vice president, chief financial officer and chairman of the board of the River Cats Foundation. "As an organization, the River Cats feel privileged to be a part of a very special night and ongoing program."
