Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis slipped past Iowa 3-2 Thursday night at AutoZone Park to earn a series split.

The Redbirds took the lead for good in the sixth inning with a little help from the Cubs. Colby Rasmus led off the inning with a single and scored on Nick Stavinoha's double to left field. Stavinoha scored one batter later thanks to a throwing error from Cubs shortstop Andres Blanco, who was throwing behind Stavinoha at second base on a ground ball. The Redbirds bullpen shut down the Cubs from there with three pitchers combining for three scoreless innings. Stavinoha and Rasmus each finished the night with two hits to lead the ‘Birds.

Memphis starter P.J. Walters was strong in his six innings of work allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Walters earned his team-best fifth win in just his seventh start for the ‘Birds. Ron Flores notched the save with a spotless ninth inning and now leads the team with four saves. Iowa starter Justin Berg was the tough-luck loser giving up three runs, one earned, on six hits over six innings.

The Cubs scored their two runs in the fourth inning on back-to-back extra-base hits from Koyie Hill and Luis Figueroa. Hill drove in the first run with a double and Figueroa's triple scored Hill.

Memphis heads to Round Rock tomorrow night to take on the Express. Clayton Mortensen is scheduled to make his second start for the ‘Birds and will face Round Rock right-hander Chad Reineke. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. at The Dell Diamond.
