Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, Calif. - The River Cats had home runs from Jermaine Mitchell and Josh Donaldson, but ultimately lost to the Tucson Padres by a score of 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Raley Field.
Mitchell put the River Cats on the board early, scoring a run when Michael Taylor reached base on a fielding error from Padres shortstop Beamer Weems. Sacramento's starting pitcher Tyson Ross was perfect through four innings, but the Padres broke the silence in the fifth, scoring a run when Jeremy Hermida drove in Matt Clark with a single to right-center field.
The River Cats took the lead again with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on solo home runs from Mitchell and Donaldson. The lead lasted just one inning, however, as Tucson plated two in the top of the seventh. The T-Pads tacked on two more runs-one in the eighth and one in the ninth-sealing their 5-3 victory.
Mitchell finished 2-for-5 with two runs, one RBI, a double and a home run, while Donaldson went 2-for-5 with a run, an RBI and a home run. They were the only River Cats players to record more than one base hit.
Ross received the no-decision, allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings, with five hits and one walk. Reliever Rich Thompson was charged with the loss, giving up one earned on three hits and three walks in one inning. Former River Cat Neil Wagner received the win with one scoreless inning of work. T-Pads right Erik Hamren picked up his sixth save of the season, striking out the side in order in the bottom of the ninth.
The final game of the homestand comes tomorrow afternoon for a Seniors Eat Free Monday presented by Cache Creek Casino Resort. Professional baseball's strikeout leader, Dan Straily (3-2, 1.10 ERA), will take on T-Pads righty Will Scott (0-0, 14.73 ERA) at 12:05 p.m. at Raley Field.
