River Cats Earn Split with 3-2 Win over Grizzlies

FRESNO, Calif. - Daric Barton drove in two runs on two hits, helping the River Cats beat the Fresno Grizzlies by a score of 3-2 at Chukchansi Park on Sunday evening.
The Cats struck first in the top of the first inning when Hiro Nakajima doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error from pitcher Justin Fitzgerald. Sacramento added the would-be game-winning runs when Barton singled-home Shane Peterson and Jemile Weeks in the top of the third.
The Grizzlies scored once in the fifth-on an Ydwin Villegas RBI-single-and once in the six-on a Johnny Monell run-scoring double. That would be all the offense they could muster, however, losing to Sacramento, 3-2.
Barton finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Nakajima finished 1-for-4 with a run and a steal. Travis Banwart was credited with his fifth win, holding the Grizzlies to two runs on seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Brian Gordon tallied his eighth save with one scoreless fame, while Chris Resop and Hideki Okajima each threw scoreless innings for their third and fifth holds, respectively.
The loss was charged to Fitzgerald, who gave up all three River Cats runs in 5.1 innings. Monell finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, while Villegas went 2-for-3 with an RBI of his own.
The River Cats now travel to Colorado Springs to open a three-game series on Monday at 6:05 p.m. when RHP Arnold Leon (0-1, 1.29 ERA) takes on Sky Sox RHP Aaron Cook (0-3, 6.99 ERA) at Security Service Field.
The Cats return to Raley Field on Thursday, July 11 at 7:05 p.m. for a four-game homestand during which three bobbleheads-Eric Hinske, Mark Ellis and Eric Byrnes-will be given away.
