MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis Redbirds starting pitcher Tyler Lyons has been named the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week for the July 1-7 period.
The 25-year-old went 1-0 while striking out a league-leading 19 batters over a pair of quality starts against division-rivals Iowa and Nashville during the week. Lyons issued only three walks and limited hitters to a .083 average (4-for-48) over 15.0 innings.
Last Monday against Iowa, Lyons matched a season-best nine strikeouts over seven shutout innings of two-hit ball. He departed with a 2-0 lead, but took a no-decision due to a blown save by the bullpen.
In yesterday's 13-3 rout of Nashville, Lyons again fanned nine while throwing eight strong innings, which was the longest outing in Lyons' career and by a Redbirds starter in 2013. He retired the first nine batters of the game and final 14 in a row that bracketed a Hunter Morris three-run home run.
Lyons has dominated the PCL in three starts since being optioned back to Memphis on June 22, going 2-0 with a 1.22 ERA (3er/22.0ip), 22 strikeouts, and limiting opposing hitters to a .070 average against (5-for-69).
Overall for Memphis in 2013, Lyons has tossed six quality starts in 11 outings, going 4-2 with a 3.42 ERA (26er/68.1ip). He has struck out 60 batters against only 12 walks.
Lyons is one of five Redbirds pitchers to be promoted to St. Louis and make their Major League debut this season, joining John Gast, Seth Maness, Michael Wacha, and Kevin Siegrist. The southpaw went 2-3 with a 5.51 ERA (20er/32.2ip) and 21 strikeouts in six starts for the Cardinals.
The PCL award is the first weekly honor of Lyons' three-year career and the second earned by a Redbirds player in 2013. Gast was awarded the league's Pitcher of the Week honor for the April 15-21 period.
