Iowa Cubs News Release
Albuquerque, NM - The Iowa Cubs (46-45) scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning in an 8-5 win over the Albuquerque Isotopes (50-41) at Isotopes Park tonight. Brian Schlitter recorded a strikeout with the bases loaded to end both the eighth and ninth innings and preserve the win. The Cubs earned a split of the four-game series and maintained their two-game lead over Memphis in the division standings.
The Cubs got on the board quickly when Donnie Murphy launched a solo homer with one out in the top of the first inning. It was Murphy's 10th homer of the year, but he had to leave the game after getting hit by a pitch in the left knee in the second. The homer was the only run allowed by Isotopes' starter Rob Rasmussen in five innings.
Cubs' starter Guillermo Moscoso gave up a two-run homer to Matt Angle in the bottom of the first inning, but allowed just one more hit and no more runs through the sixth. Moscoso walked five and struck out five while recording his third straight quality start, and fifth overall on the season.
The Cubs sent 12 men to the plate in the seventh inning. Geison Aguasviva faced the first four without getting an out. Anthony Giansanti doubled with the bases loaded to drive in the first two runs and gave the Cubs a 3-2 lead. Gregory Infante followed in relief and gave up a two-run single to Ty Wright that extended the Cubs' lead to 5-2. The Cubs reloaded the bases with one out and Infante walked Jae-Hoon Ha and J.C. Boscan to force in two more runs. Darnell McDonald added a sacrifice fly to complete the rally. The seven-run outburst matched the Cubs' biggest inning of the season.
Michael Bowden struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning, extending his scoreless streak to 11 innings over his last eight appearances, but the Isotopes mounted a comeback against Casey Coleman in the eighth. Alex Castellanos led off with a solo homer. With runners on second and third and one out, Jeremy Moore drove in two with a pinch-hit single that cut the Cubs' lead to 8-5. After an error and a flyout, Coleman walked Dee Gordon to load the bases. The Cubs turned to Schlitter and he struck out Angle to end the inning.
Castellanos and Ian Stewart led off the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles, but Schlitter got the next two batters on flyouts. Moore drew a walk to load the bases again, but Schlitter struck out John Baker to end the game. Moscoso (6-5) earned his fourth straight win and Schlitter earned his ninth save. Aguasviva (4-4) was charged with the loss.
The Cubs continue this road trip tomorrow night with the first of a three-game series in New Orleans. LH Chris Rusin (7-7, 3.27) will start for the Cubs. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:40.
