Grizzlies Split Series with Sacramento After 3-2 Loss

July 8, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, Calif. - After coming back to defeat the Sacramento River Cats the last two nights, the Fresno Grizzlies fell one run short of doing it again on Sunday as they lost 3-2 to the visitors at Chukchansi Park. The Fresno loss results in a series split between the Grizzlies and River Cats.

The River Cats established a 3-0 advantage over the first three innings off Grizzlies starting pitcher Justin Fitzgerald. Hiro Nakajima scored in the first after he stole third base and crossed home due to Fitzgerald's throwing error. In the third, Daric Barton hit a two-run single.

In the fifth, the Grizzlies first responded with an RBI single by Ydwin Villegas. The RBI by Villegas was his ninth run driven in over his last seven games.

Juan Perez and Johnny Monell hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning to bring the Grizzlies within one run, 3-2.

The Sacramento bullpen stymied the Grizzlies offense, however, as Fresno had one base hit over the final three innings.

The Fresno bullpen, meanwhile, extended its scoreless streak to 16 innings. Steve Edlefsen and Daryl Maday combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Fitzgerald suffered his second straight loss after allowing three runs over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out three and walked three.

Villegas finished with a team-high two hits for Fresno. Monell reached base twice for Fresno with a double and walk.

Travis Banwart struck out seven and allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk over 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Brian Gordon tallied the save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Grizzlies continue their homestand on Monday when they start a three-game series against Reno. Monday's 7:05 pm game features Fresno starting pitcher Yusmeiro Petit against Reno's righty Mike Bolsinger.
