Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, CA - The Sacramento River Cats (33-47) came into Tuesday's matinee seeking their third win in a row and second road series win of the season. In this afternoon's 14-10 win over the Las Vegas 51s (41-37), they not only strung together three wins for the first time since May 25, they also outpaced one of the league's hottest teams, despite a season-high six errors.
The River Cats were missing some integral players in the lineup today, but the offense didn't miss a beat, racking up 17 hits while the first six hitters in the order all scored at least one run. Of the River Cats nine starters, only right fielder Ryan Lollis was in the opening day lineup while four others began the year in Double-A Richmond.
Things got off to a hot start in the desert Tuesday afternoon, as Sacramento scored two runs in the first inning for the third time this series. Similar to the first game of the series, the 51s responded in their half of the first frame, scoring five runs off Sacramento starter Adalberto Mejia. The southpaw, making his first road start in Triple-A, would only allow one run in his next three innings but saw his season ERA climb from 3.38 at the beginning of the day to 5.71.
From then on, Sacramento took control and would not look back, scoring in all but two innings in today's win. Starting in centerfielder, Robbie Garvey continued to impress, going 3-for-6 today with his third stolen base. The Las Vegas native is now hitting .667 (6-for-9) with a home run in his first three games with Sacramento. Veteran catcher Miguel Olivo had a three-hit day of his own, driving in two and scoring a pair of runs. Shortstop Rando Moreno extended his hitting-streak to five games, going 3-for-4 today with two runs and is now 9-for-21 (.429) during his streak.
The four-run fifth inning was highlighted by left fielder Travis Ishikawa and second baseman Myles Schroder's back-to-back home runs, a first for Sacramento this season. The long balls were Ishikawa's second this season and second of the series while Schroder's smash was his first in Triple-A.
All-in-all, the River Cats and 51s racked up 33 hits combined and nine total errors, five courtesy of the 'Cats, tying their franchise-high. Sacramento seems to have a propensity to the beat the heat, as they not only brought their road day game record to 9-2, but also won their ninth game against Las Vegas.
Tomorrow will be a rare off day for the River Cats as they fly home to the friendly confines of Raley Field. Sacramento will begin a four-game series with the Albuquerque Isotopes Thursday, with right-hander Joan Gregorio (1-4, 5.59) going for the home side and righty Jeff Hoffman (4-5, 3.49) on the hill for the 'Topes.
