Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - In a game where runs were hard to come by, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox got the upper hand in the 14th inning and held on to beat the Round Rock Express 3-2 on Monday night at Dell Diamond.

With the game tied at two in the 14th, the Sky Sox got back-to-back hits from Eric Young Jr. and Nate Orf to put runners on first and third with one out. Kyle Wren followed with a single to left field to score Orf from third with what proved to be the winning run.

In the bottom half, Ariel Pena returned to the mound and retired the Express in order to finish off his second win of the season. From the beginning, both pitching staffs were on their game.

Round Rock put a couple runners aboard against Sky Sox starter Josh Hader (0-2, 4.50) with one out in the first, but the Sky Sox southpaw struck out Jared Hoying and induced a ground ball from Pedro Ciriaco to get through the first inning unscathed.

In the third, Hader struck out a pair of Round Rock batters in a scoreless frame, giving him five through the first three innings.

The Express loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth against Hader as they tried to score the game's first run. On the ninth pitch of the at-bat, Hader struck out Doug Bernier looking with a 3-2 changeup to leave the bases full of Express.

Hader struck out another pair of batters in the fifth to end his start on a high note. In five scoreless innings, Hader allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out eight. He did not factor into the decision.

Express starter Austin Bibens-Dirx (0-1, 3.77) also got off to a strong start. After the first, no Sky Sox reached base until the fifth when Josmil Pinto and Orf recorded back-to-back one out singles. But Bibens-Dirx retired the next two batters to pitch a scoreless frame.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Sky Sox turned to the bullpen. Michael Kirkman entered and got the first two outs quickly before a pair of two-out walks ended his night. Corey Knebel came in and struck out Bernier to keep the games scoreless after six.

Bibens-Dirx finished his start with six scoreless innings pitched, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out three.

In the seventh, the Express scored the game's first run off Knebel to take a 1-0 lead on Hansel Alberto's double.

The Sky Sox were quick to respond in the eighth as Orf led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, his first with the Sky Sox, to tie the game at one. Soon after, Austin Ross pitched three scoreless relief innings to keep the game tied after 10 innings. Damien Magnifico pitched a scoreless 11th as the game remained even.

In the 12th, Young Jr. doubled and eventually came around to score on an error to give the Sky Sox the lead. But Round Rock answered with a run in the bottom half off Magnifico to send the game to the 13th. Ariel Pena came in kept the game tied going to the 14th inning. After the Sky Sox took the lead, Pena returned to the mound and finished off the victory for Colorado Springs.

The Sky Sox conclude their series with the Express tomorrow night. Jorge Lopez (1-5, 6.05) is scheduled to get the start for the Sky Sox. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. MDT at Dell Diamond.
