Reno Aces News Release
RENO - The El Paso Chihuahuas roughed up Braden Shipley (@shipley25) en route to a lopsided 13-3 victory over the Reno Aces on Monday night at Greater Nevada Field. The visitors totaled 20 hits, including 12 off the 24-year-old over four-plus innings.
The Chihuahuas (46-32) never trailed after scoring twice off Shipley in the second. Jason Hagerty hit a run-scoring double to make it 1-0, and Diego Goris followed with an RBI single in the frame.
The Aces (41-37) answered in the bottom half on a Tuffy Gosewisch (@santiagosewisch) run-scoring single, but the Chihuahuas plated three more runs in the third to open the floodgates. Named as the PCL's Player of the Week earlier Monday, Austin Hedges ripped an RBI double down the left-field line, pushing El Paso's lead back to two. Moments later, Hector Sanchez belted his third homer in two games to right for a 5-1 cushion.
Shipley's struggles continued in the fifth when a walk, RBI double and infield single knocked him out of the game. With Daniel Gibson (@d_gibs_6) called upon in relief, El Paso's Hunter Renfroe lined a grand slam into the Aces' right-field bullpen, extending the lead to 10-1.
Both teams exchanged single runs in the sixth. In El Paso's half, Jabari Blash homered before Zach Borenstein smashed an RBI single to right in Reno's half.
The two teams traded runs again in the eighth. Blash hit a deep sacrifice fly to left to make it 12-2, while Carlos Rivero (@Carlos_Rivero3) lined a run-scoring double in a pinch-hit appearance, bringing the deficit back to nine.
Following Rivero's two-bagger, Gosewisch was beaned by Johnny Hellweg. In the ensuing frame, Aces lefty Steve Hathaway (@Mr_Hath) fired his first pitch - and only pitch - over the head of Taylor Lindsey, prompting an immediate ejection.
As a result, Sean Jamieson (@SeanJay04), who entered at third base as part of a double switch earlier in the game, was brought on to record the final three outs. Three consecutive singles led to El Paso's 13th and final run, but Jamieson found the strike zone against the Chihuahuas' 3-4-5 hitters. The 28-year-old induced a foul popout off the bat of Renfroe, struck out Hedges and then got Sanchez on an infield pop to short to end the inning.
Shipley (6-4) lasted four-plus innings in his shortest start of the season. He allowed a career-high 12 hits and matched a career high for earned runs allowed at eight. Bryan Rodriguez (4-1) threw six innings of two-run ball to earn the win.
The 20 hits allowed by the Aces set a new season high by the opposing team. Borenstein led the Aces with two hits in five trips to the plate.
The Aces and Chihuahuas conclude their five-game set with the finale of the series on Tuesday at Greater Nevada Field. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. PT. Left-hander Edwin Escobar (4-2, 4.71) will toe the rubber for Reno, while righty Daniel McCutchen (8-3, 4.87) gets the nod for El Paso.
