Grizzlies lose ground on Rainiers, fall 6-2

The Fresno Grizzlies fell victim to the Tacoma Rainiers 6-2 Monday night from Chukchansi Park. Rainiers' Luis Sardinas (3-for-5) supplied the offense as he singled three times, drove in three runs and scored twice. Tacoma reliever Steve Johnson (3-0) picked up the win after hurling two innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out two. Fresno reliever Kevin Chapman (2-3) suffered the loss after flinging two and one-third innings, allowing three runs (earned), on four hits while striking out two.

The Rainiers struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Zach Shank (2-for-3) doubled to left, scoring Sardinas. Then, Norichika Aoki (2-for-4) singled to left, scoring Shank. Tacoma led 2-0.

Fresno cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second when Colin Moran blasted his fifth home run of the season to right. Preston Tucker evened the score in the bottom of the third when he hit into a double play. It was a 2-2 game after three innings.

Grizzlies' starter Brad Peacock (2-3) picked up a no-decision after he threw three innings, allowing six hits, two runs (earned), walking one and striking out three.

Tacoma starter Joe Wieland (6-4) also earned a no-decision after he tossed five innings, allowing five hits, two runs (earned), walking one and punching out seven.

The Rainiers took the lead in the top of the eighth when Sardinas singled to center, knocking in two runners. Then, Shank singled to right knocking in Sardinas. Tacoma led 5-2. They added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Sardinas singled to right, scoring Efren Navarro (2-for-4). Tacoma reliever Casey Coleman earned his fourth save after throwing the final two innings, securing the 6-2 win.

Grizzlies' Jon Kemmer (3-for-3) singled three times and reached in all four of his plate appearances (walk). Jordan Jankowski added two innings of relief, striking out two in the loss.

The finale of the four-game series will be Tuesday night from Downtown Fresno. The Grizzlies will become the Tacos and throw RHP Cesar Valdez (4-1, 3.71) while the Rainiers counter with RHP Zach Lee (7-5, 5.08). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PT.
