TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Altoona Curve will meet in the opener of a four-game series...The left-hander Andrew Albers tossed a career-long eight innings, limiting the Flying Squirrels to no runs on five hits, and the Rock Cats pounced for eight early runs in an 8-0 shutout win over Richmond on Thursday night in front of 9,513 fans at The Diamond.

THE PLAYOFF RACE: The Flying Squirrels enter tonight's series opener with the Altoona Curve trailing the Bowie Baysox by a 1/2 games for the Wild Card in the Western Division...The Baysox will play one fewer game (141) than the Flying Squirrels (142) this season...Bowie's magic number to eliminate Richmond from playoff contention is four...Any combination of Flying Squirrel losses and Baysox wins that equal four would eliminate Richmond from playoff contention...The Harrisburg Senators clinched the Western Division with last night's 10-0 win over Portland and will host the first two games of the Western Division playoffs 9/7 and 9/8.

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH: The Flying Squirrels announced a crowd of 9,513 fans last night, giving the club an average attendance of 6,679 fans per game and surpassing last season's average home attendance of 6,626...The club was limited to 67 home opens due to rain as opposed to 70 in 2010...Richmond announced six sellout crowds of 9,560 this season...The Flying Squirrels will finish second in the Eastern League to Reading in both average (6,720) and total (456,957) attendance for the season.

ROCKED: The Flying Squirrels were shutout for the ninth time this season, blanked by left-hander Andrew Albers and the New Britain Rock Cats in the series finale 8-0...It was the worst shutout defeat of the season for the club...Richmond was shutout 7-0 at Binghamton 8/13...The shutout thrown by New Britain was its eighth of the season.

WALKED ALL OVER: The Flying Squirrels matched a season by issuing 11 walks in last night's 8-0 loss to New Britain...The club also walked 11 batters 7/30 at Trenton in a 17-5 loss to the Thunder...Left-hander Ryan Verdugo matched his career high with five walks and also equaled the mark for most walks by a Richmond starter this season...The Flying Squirrels walked 33 Rock Cat batters in the four-game series at The Diamond (8.25 BB/G).

THE GEORGIA PEACH: Second baseman Charlie Culberson went 2-for-4 last night, his team-leading 33rd multi-hit game of the season...The 22-year-old was 10-for-18 (.556) with three doubles, six RBIs, and four runs scored over the four-game series with New Britain...The Georgia-native hit .231 (25-for-108) in 28 games in August, and eight of his 25 hits for the month as well as three of his six doubles came in the first three games against the Rock Cats...Culberson was batting .181 (17-for-94) through his first 25 games in August entering the series.

HOME AND AWAY: The Flying Squirrels finished the regular season 45-26 overall at home - the best home record in the Eastern League - and they are the only team in the league with 40 or more wins at home...Entering yesterday, the club's 45 wins at home were tied for the six-most of all of the full-season teams in MiLB...They batted .264 in 71 games at The Diamond while averaging 4.56 runs per game at home (324R/71G)....Overall, the club is 28-39 on the road, and is batting .228 and averaging 3.49 runs per game (234R/67G) in 67 road contests...The team plays its final four games on the road.

PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 3.51 ERA through 138 games...Richmond's pitching staff has allowed two runs or less in 49 of its 138 games (36%)...Starting pitching has allowed three runs or less in 95 of the team's 138 games (69%) and the club is 65-30 in those contests.
