New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
(Portland, ME)-The Fisher Cats rallied from down 4-0 to tie the Sea Dogs, only to have Portland plate a run in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 win over New Hampshire in the opener of a four-game series on Friday night at Hadlock Field.
New Hampshire (74-65) will finish no worse than in a three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League after Reading beat Binghamton and Trenton topped New Britain on Friday night. The playoffs open at the home of the Eastern Division champ on Wednesday night, September 7. The Fisher Cats can lock up first place with a win in any of the three remaining games in Portland---and they now know they will play beyond Monday's scheduled end of the season in any scenario.
Portland (59-80) opened a 4-0 lead after two innings on Friday night. Jeff Howell singled in one run and Mitch Dening hit a three-run homer to put the Sea Dogs up.
New Hampshire broke into the scoring column with consecutive doubles by Mark Sobolewski and Jonathan Diaz in the fifth inning. They added two more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 4-3. Mike McDade singled, advanced to second when Yan Gomes reached on an error. Mark Sobolewski drove in the first run with a single. Gomes advanced to third on a single by Mark Soboewski and scored on a passed ball.
The Sea Dogs went back up 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jeff Howell singled and scored on a triple by Ronald Bermudez.
New Hampshire tied the game against eventual winning pitcher Kyle Fernandes (3-5) in the seventh inning. Anthony Gose singled and stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Moises Sierra. Travis d'Arnaud followed with a walk and Sierra scored on a fielders choice/error which allowed Mike McDade to reach.
Portland won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Oscar Tejeda ripped out a two-out double and scored on a Mark Wagner double off losing pitcher Rey Gonzalez (8-3).
Blake Maxwell worked two perfect innings in relief for his 15th save.
