Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Travelers were shutout 2-0 by the Springfield Cardinals in the opener of a four-game series at Dickey-Stephens Park on Tuesday night.
RHP Arturo Reyes (W, 3-2) tossed seven efficient innings for the Cards and allowed just four hits (all singles) with a walk and seven strikeouts. Reyes matched a season high with back-to-back seven strikeout performances.
LHP Iden Nazario, RHP Tyler Barraclough and RHP Chris Thomas (S, 1) combined to complete the shutout with two scoreless frames between the eighth and ninth.
Arkansas stranded the bases loaded in the eighth and left the tying run on first in the ninth.
Springfield plated a run in the first inning off Travs starter RHP Kyle McGowin (L, 4-3), but McGowin utilized a double play to end the inning. The other Cardinals run scored thanks to a 2B Bruce Caldwell home run to right leading off the third.
McGowin allowed the two runs over six innings with six hits, five walks and four strikeouts. The five walks surrendered were a season-high.
LHP Chris O'Grady worked a 1-2-3 seventh and RHP Austin Wood tossed two perfect innings following O'Grady.
2B Sherman Johnson reached base four times thanks to two singles and two walks.
LF D'Arby Myers went 2-for-3 with a walk.
No Travelers player recorded an extra-base hit in the game.
With the loss and Northwest Arkansas getting swept in a doubleheader by Tulsa, the Travs actually gained a half game in the standings. The Naturals sit two games ahead of the Travs in the Texas League North Division with 14 games to play (six against each other).
The Cardinals and Travelers will play game two of the series on Wednesday at Dickey-Stephens Park. First pitch for $1 Hot Dog night is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
