Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - RHP Arturo Reyes struck out seven batters through seven scoreless innings, helping lead the Springfield Cardinals to the 2-0 shutout win against the Arkansas Travelers before 5,941 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Tuesday night. The Cardinals have won four straight games, seven of their last eight and eight of their last 10.

Springfield (23-34) swung in front right away, striking in the top of the first inning against RHP Kyle McGowin (L, 4-3). CF Charlie Tilson worked a leadoff walk to start the game, before racing around to third on a single from LF Mike O'Neill. RF Jeremy Hazelbaker then plated Tilson with an RBI fielder's choice lined to right field, lifting Springfield ahead, 1-0.

The Cardinals quickly doubled the advantage in the top of the third. Leading off the inning, 2B Bruce Caldwell hammered a solo home run to right field, his second long-ball and eighth RBI in just his first eight Double-A games, to double the lead to 2-0.

The two tallies proved to be enough run support as Reyes (W, 3-2) put in a stifling seven innings, blanking Arkansas (30-26) throughout his start while striking out seven batters. Reyes allowed just four hits and one walk, not allowing a single runner to make it past second base. The Warden, Washington native has not surrendered more than two earned runs in any of his first seven starts for Springfield.

Reyes wrapped up his seventh excellent inning with his seventh strikeout, giving way to LHP Iden Nazario for the eighth. Nazario retired the frame's first batter, but walked 2B Sherman Johnson, putting one on with one down for RHP Kyle Barraclough. Barraclough retired his first batter for the second out, but a single and a walk loaded the bases with two away. However, Barraclough got out of the jam with a floating liner caught by Caldwell, keeping the Travs off the board.

Barraclough came back out for the ninth and walked a pair of runners around a strikeout and a fly out, giving way to RHP Chris Thomas (S, 1) with two on and two down. Facing Johnson, Thomas induced a game-ending groundout to 1B Jonathan Rodriguez, stranding the tying runs and closing the 2-0 shutout win for Springfield.
