Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

MIDLAND, TX - Kyle Westwood picked up his third consecutive victory with four shutout frames of relief Tuesday night as Corpus Christi rolled to a 5-2 victory over Midland in the series opener at Security Bank Ballpark.

The Hooks (38-18) now lead the RockHounds (29-28) by 9 ½ games with 14 to play in the Texas League South first-half race. Corpus Christi's magic number is five.

The Hooks pushed across a two runs against Nate Long in the first. Jio Mier worked a one-out walk and cruised to third on a double by Andrew Aplin. Mier scored on a wild pitch and Aplin came home when Colin Moran lifted a sac fly to center field.

Long (3-4) retired 16 of the next 17 batters.

Mark Appel turned in a solid start for the Hooks, scattering three hits and three walks over five innings. Colin Walsh accounted for the two blemishes, launching home runs in the first and fifth frames.

Westwood (4-2) held the Hounds to a pair of hits and a walk, stranding four. He struck out a season-high six batters.

Corpus Christi took the lead in the seventh. Jon Kemmer opened with a base hit and advanced 90 feet when Walsh threw wildly to second on a force opportunity. Leo Heras surveyed a bunt single down the third base line to load the bases. Long struck out Brett Booth before being lifted for Ryan Dull. Tony Kemp attacked Dulll's first pitch and served a line drive into right for a 3-2 Hooks advantage.

Kemp went 3-for-5 on the night, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

His club added a couple key insurance runs in the ninth off Bobby Wahl. Tyler White belted a lead-off pinch-hit home run to right field. It stands as the first Corpus Christi homer in the last 10 games. Five batters later, Aplin punched a two-out, RBI knock through the right side to cap the scoring.

The series continues Wednesday with Aussie right-hander Tim Atherton (2-2, 5.45) slated to pitch for Midland. Corpus Christi counters with the electric tandem of Michael Feliz (0-1, 3.38) and Chris Devenski (6-0, 0.71). First pitch 6:30.
