York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution won for the ninth time in 11 games, defeating the Long Island Ducks 10-5 in Thursday evening's series opener in front of 5,053 fans at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, NY. The Revs climb back to the .500 mark (56-56) for the first time since July 21, and will face the Ducks again on Friday evening.
York got off to a quick start, as the first five batters all reached base as part of a three-run first inning. Wilson Batista singled home the first run on a grounder through the right side of the infield, while Chad Tracy ripped a two-run double to left, giving the Revs a quick 3-0 lead.
Long Island answered back with RBI singles from Bryant Nelson and Ryan Strieby in their half of the first inning, but Nelson was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Michael Hernandez attempting to score the equalizer on Strieby's hit, keeping York on top 3-2, as the Revs never relinquished the lead they gained in their first at-bats. Each team totaled four base hits in the eventful first inning.
York put up three more runs in the second. Charlie Neil led off with a first pitch single to center, which was followed by an RBI triple to center by Ruddy Yan. Ofilio Castro added an RBI single to left, and Batista extended the lead to 6-2 on a sac fly to center.
Ducks starter Nick DeBarr (2-10) lasted only two innings, charged with six runs on eight hits, taking the loss.
Revs starter Beau Vaughan worked scoreless frames in the second and third, but allowed an RBI bloop single to Ralph Henriquez with two outs in the fourth, and was charged with another run when his inherited runner crossed on Josh Barfield's RBI single. The inning stayed alive thanks in part to a bad hop base hit earlier in the inning, leading to the pair of two-out runs, bringing Long Island within 6-4. Reliever Julio DePaula struck out cleanup hitter Bill Hall to leave the bases loaded, however, and it was all Revs from there.
York scored three times in the sixth on an RBI single to left by Batista, and another two-run double to left field from Tracy who drove in a season-best four RBI on the night.
The Revs tacked on one more in the seventh on a bloop single to left by Mark Teahen.
Long Island scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Strieby, the only run allowed by the York bullpen in 5.1 innings.
Stephen Penney (5-2) earned the win, allowing just an infield single in two innings of work. The infield hit by Ray Navarrete is the only base runner he's allowed to reach in four innings over his last three appearances.
York 's 16-hit attack was paced by Batista, who was 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and a pair of stolen bases, as well as Yan who went 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, and three runs scored. Eight of York's nine starters had hits, while six Revs batters posted multiple hit efforts.
The Revs have now won seven straight series openers.
York will send Pedro Liriano (5-3, 4.71) to the mound on Friday, opposite Ducks lefty Matt Way (4-5, 4.15). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, YorkRevolution.com, and on the Shoutcast phone app (YorkRevs) beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
