York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to tie the score, but lost to the Long Island Ducks 5-4 in 11 innings on Friday evening in front of 4,647 fans at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip. The Ducks snap a seven-game losing streak with the win, while the Revs have still won nine of their last 12 contests. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night.
Ducks starter Matt Way struck out four over two scoreless innings, but had to leave due to injury, leaving an already depleted pitching staff with the task of covering the rest of the game. It marked the second consecutive night that a Long Island starter lasted only two innings, as Nick DeBarr only made it through two frames the night before. DeBarr (3-10) ended up pitching a scoreless top of the 11th inning, bouncing back to earn the win on Friday night.
Long Island used Bob Zimmermann, who started just two days earlier, to work the third and fourth innings. Lefty James Houser, who started three days earlier and is scheduled to start again on Sunday, worked a scoreless fifth inning.
Meanwhile, Long Island took a 4-0 lead, scoring twice in the fourth and fifth innings.
Ramon Castro opened the scoring with a home run to left-center, and a Kraig Binick RBI single provided the Ducks with their two runs in the fourth. York starter Pedro Liriano then lost his command in the fifth inning, as two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs, before a bases loaded walk to Ryan Strieby forced in a run and ended Liriano's night.
Reliever Anthony Slama nearly escaped further trouble unscathed, but a close 3-2 pitch to Ray Navarrete was called a ball, forcing in one more run with two outs in the inning.
Slama came back to retire Binick on a fly out as the Ducks left the bases loaded for the second time in three innings. That fly ball began a club record-tying stretch of 17 consecutive hitters retired, as York's bullpen did not allow a hit until the 11th.
Down 4-0, York rallied against reliever Jared Lansford in the top of the eighth. Wilson Batista and Mark Teahen singled to get things started, and Andres Perez reached on an infield single to load the bases with no outs. Matt Spencer then chopped a two-run single into right bringing the Revs within two runs. With one out, Ruddy Yan struck a sharp grounder off Lansford's hand, as the ball deflected to shortstop for a force out. Yan beat the double play attempt at first, however, and first baseman Willis Otanez' throw behind Spencer at third base sailed high, allowing Spencer to score the tying run on the error. Lansford came back to strand the go-ahead run in scoring position, before working scoreless innings in the ninth and tenth.
P.J. Phillips ripped a one-out single up the middle in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Revs appeared to have him caught stealing as left-hander Edward Paredes picked over to first with Phillips running, but after being called safe on a close play at second, Phillips scored the winning run with a headfirst slide at the plate on a single to left by Binick, just ahead of Spencer's throw from the outfield.
