York Revolution News Release
A night after an offensive explosion, the York Revolution offense was frustrated throughout a 4-1 loss to the Somerset Patriots on Wednesday afternoon in front of 7,005 fans at TD Bank Ballpark. York's road trip will wrap up on Thursday evening when they shoot for a four-game series split with the Patriots before returning home this weekend.
Somerset got to York starter Chris Cody early as the first three Patriot batters collected hits for a quick 2-0 lead. After Jonny Tucker led off with a single, Aharon Eggleston tripled to right-center to drive in the first run of the day. Eggleston then scored on a single to left-center by Eddy Martinez-Esteve for the second run.
The Revs were unable to make the most of their minimal opportunities, held to just four hits. Salvador Paniagua led off the third with a double to right-center but was stranded at second. Eric Patterson then led off the fourth with a triple to deep center and scored to cut the deficit to 2-1, but his run crossed on a double play as the Revs were held without an RBI on the day.
Cody did not allow another hit until the fifth inning, but was greeted in the fifth with a leadoff single to left by Damaso Espino who advanced on a sacrifice bunt. After a two-out walk to Martinez-Esteve, Cody nearly picked off Espino on a close play at second that could have ended the inning. But after the Patriots employed a double steal, both runs scored on a single to center by Ty Wright, plating what would prove to be the final margin.
The Revs received back-to-back singles from Wilson Valdez and Patterson in the sixth and then used a double steal of their own, but Patriots starter Derell McCall and reliever Daniel Herrera posted back-to-back strikeouts to escape that threat.
York's last opportunity came in the eighth when Justin Greene drew a leadoff walk and Valdez reached on an error that put runners at second and third, but with one out, Chad Tracy hit a flare toward short that was handled on one-hop by Edwin Maysonet who threw to first for the second out, and both York runners were caught at third base with Greene tagged out to end the inning.
McCall (2-1) earned the win, allowing one run in 5.2 innings. Four Patriot relievers handled the rest, including a perfect ninth inning for Jon Hunton's tenth save of the year.
Cody (3-2) saw a three-game winning streak snapped, charged with four runs on six hits in six innings.
Julio DePaula and Mark Hendrickson each fired 1-2-3 innings in relief out of the York bullpen.
The Revs will send Jorge Martinez (1-0, 4.99) to the mound on Thursday at 7:05 p.m., facing Somerset's Gary Moran (2-2, 4.50). Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
Notes: Patterson (2-for-4) now has seven hits in his last 14 at-bats, including four extra-base hits... with two stolen bases, the Revs now lead the league with 53 steals through 40 games... the Revs and Patriots conclude a stretch where they will have played seven of their last 10 games against each other on Thursday; the two teams are 3-3 against each other so far this season, and now 71-71 head-to-head all-time.
