Crabs Hold on to Take Series Opener

CAMDEN, NJ . - Brian Burres pitched seven quality innings as the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs took the series opener over the Camden Riversharks 5-4 Tuesday night at Campbell's Field. The Blue Crabs are now 6-1 on the season against the Riversharks.

Burres (3-2) matched his longest start of the season going seven innings. He allowed two runs on three hits for his team-leading third win of the season. The start lowered Burres' ERA on the season down to 2.00. Jim Ed Warden pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 8th save of the season.

Southern Maryland (16-21) got off to a fast start with a run in the first. With two runners on, C.J. Ziegler earned his team-best 23rd RBI of the season with an RBI single to make it 1-0.

Alex Hudak tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd with an RBI single of his own but Southern Maryland regained the lead in the 3rd courtesy of an Angel Sanchez RBI double.

The Blue Crabs added two more runs in the 4th inning. Amadeo Zazueta connected with a two-run home run, his second of the year, to up the advantage to 4-1.

Trailing 5-2 in the 8th inning, Camden (14-24) rallied for two runs to get within one. Hudak doubled home a run and former Crab Jose Julio-Ruiz tripled in a run to make it 5-4, but the tying run was stranded at third base.

The Blue Crabs continue their four-game series with the Camden Riversharks tomorrow night at 7:05. The team returns home for a five-game series spanning four days against the Long Island Ducks beginning Friday June 6.
