Reversed Home Run Call Leaves Tourists Short

May 4, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE - The unlucky breaks just keep happening to the Asheville Tourists. In the latest edition of close but not quite enough, Terrin Vavra watched a three-run Home Run sail over the left field wall, rounded the bases, and took a seat in the dugout after receiving his congratulations. The Home Run was disputed by the fielding team and eventually overturned to a foul ball. Asheville lost to the Delmarva Shorebirds by three runs; 4-1.

At the time of Vavra's opposite field Home Run that was overturned, the Tourists trailed the Shorebirds 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. For a brief moment the scoreboard read 3-2 but Vavra was called back to the box and the runners were put back on the base paths. The Tourists would not score in the inning.

Delmarva added a pair of insurance runs late in the game and the Tourists plated their lone run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Coco Montes. Colten Schmidt made his first start for Asheville and suffered the loss despite a very strong outing. Schmidt went five innings and allowed only two runs while striking out three.

Derrik Watson continued his impressive run out of the bullpen with a pair of shutout frames. The Tourists managed only two hits overall but worked six walks in the contest. Asheville also made a number of great defensive plays highlighted by a trio of double-plays turned.

Delmarva now sits at 22-4 on the year and 5-0 against Asheville. The Tourists still have two games slated with the Shorebirds including tomorrow's afternoon matchup. The first pitch is set for 2:05pm.
