Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - Strikeouts were aplenty at Segra Park on Friday evening. The Fireflies pitching staff combined for 14 whiffs against Lexington, but the Legends took the series opener by a final score of 5-2.
Willy Taveras (L, 2-3) received the starting nod for Columbia (8-19). The Dominican right-hander punched out seven while allowing two runs over six frames in his second start of the season. Andrew Mitchell tallied four strikeouts in an inning of work, and Ezequiel Zabaleta whiffed three in the final two innings.
Jon Heasley kept the Fireflies offense quiet early. He retired the first 11 hitters he faced. Mark Vientos ended the drought in the fourth with a single. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Ronny Mauricio drove a run home with a groundout to put Columbia on the board. Walter Rasquin added an RBI of his own with a single in the ninth. The Fireflies offense rallied late yet again, but ended the game with the tying run at the plate.
Lexington (13-14) reliever Daniel James (W, 1-0) provided 2.2 innings of hitless relief. Kyle Hinton (S, 2) closed the door for the Legends with a two-inning save.
