WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - The Hudson Valley Renegades dropped their series opener to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws 5-3 on Tuesday night at Heritage Financial Park.
Jersey Shore plated the first three runs of the game beginning in the third. Erick Brito singled off Brendan Beck before Marcus Lee Sang walked and Gabriel Rincones hit into a fielder's choice to place runners at the corners with two outs. An infield single by Rixon Wingrove scored Brito from third to hand the BlueClaws the early advantage.
In the fourth, Leandro Pineda doubled home Jared Carr to extend the Jersey Shore lead to 2-0. Beck finished his outing striking out five in 4.0 innings. His two runs allowed were the first runs he had allowed since July 19 against Brooklyn.
Rincones struck with a RBI double off Shane Gray to score Lee Sang in the fifth to open up the BlueClaws largest lead of the contest at 3-0.
The Renegades tallied the next three runs, with two coming in the sixth against Gabriel Cotto. After Jared Serna and Christopher Familia each singled to begin the frame, Rafael Flores drove in Serna to cut into the deficit. The next batter, Ben Cowles, struck a ball to right-center field that Carr chased down in the gap to record the out, but Familia tagged up from third base to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
In the bottom of the seventh, Andrew Walling (2-0) retired the first two Renegades before issuing a walk to Antonio Gómez. Spencer Jones then laced a 3-2 pitch to the gap in right-center to score Gómez and tie the game at 3-3.
Cole Ayers (0-1) retired the first two hitters in the eighth before Caleb Ricketts and Otto Kemp collected back-to-singles to place the go-ahead run in scoring position. Carr then blasted a two-run opposite-field double to plate, giving the BlueClaws a 5-3 advantage.
Jesus Rodriguez singled to begin the ninth, but Matt Russell retired the next three to stave off the Renegades' comeback. The Renegades and BlueClaws continue their six-game series at Heritage Financial Park on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 6:45 p.m.
Renegades Record: 58-45, 19-18
