Renegades Lose in Extra Innings

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Despite a dominant start from Blas Castaño, the Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the Rome Braves 6-2 in extra innings on Saturday night at Dutchess Stadium.

Castaño tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing five hits, walking two and striking out five.

Hudson Valley struck first in the bottom of the fourth against Rome starter Royber Salinas. Eric Wagaman launched a solo shot to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead. The blast was Wagaman's fourth of the season with Hudson Valley.

Salinas fired six innings of two-hit, one-run ball, striking out 13 and walking four.

The Braves responded to tie the game in the top of the eighth against Nelvin Correa. With the bases loaded and one out, Drew Campbell banged an RBI single to level the score at one.

The game remained deadlocked into the top of the 10th, when Rome broke ahead in the against Ryan Miller. Tyler Tolve lined a two-run single, and Beau Phillip crushed a three-run homer to give the Braves a 6-1 lead. Two of the runs were charged to Correa (0-1), who issued a walk and inherited an automatic runner to start the inning.

Pat DeMarco answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th, scoring the auto runner Carlos Narvaez to trim the deficit to 6-2. Jake McSteen (4-0) bounced back and closed it out for Rome, completing three strong innings of relief, allowing one unearned run, striking out two and walking none.

Hudson Valley wraps up its six-game series with Rome tomorrow afternoon. LHP TJ Sikkema (0-1, 2.84) takes the ball for Hudson Valley, while Rome LHP Luis De Avila (1-2, 3.36) makes his second start of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium. POSTGAME NOTES: James Nelson stole three bases in the game to push his career total with Hudson Valley to 29. He is now tied with Chris Winder and Christopher Murrill for fourth on the Renegades all-time career stolen base list.
