Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

The rain finally subsided and the sun was out in full force at Dutchess Stadium on Thursday evening. Two seven-inning games were on tap at the "Dutch" between the Williamsport Crosscutters and the hometown ‘Gades. Shane Dyer got the start in the first game for the Renegades and was defeated by the Crosscutters by a score of 4-2. Dyer pitched well, but was victimized by two big blasts off the bats of Troy Hanzawa and Cody Overbeck. In game two, both starters pitched extremely well, but Williamsport went on to shutout the ‘Gades 2-0.

The Renegades took the lead early, putting up two runs in the first inning off of Williamsport starter Rob Roth. With the bases full of ‘Gades, catcher Jake Jefferies singled sharply to left, plating Anthony Scelfo and Jason Tweedy. Jefferies now has 13 RBI in the month of July.

Williamsport would then score three runs in the following inning to grab the lead right back. The big blow came from shortstop Hanzawa, who hit a two-run homerun to left field. The Crosscutters led 3-2 after two. Overbeck then added a solo homerun of his own to make it 4-2.

John Mollicone got the ‘Gades closer in the bottom of the fifth after he sent a sacrifice fly to deep left that scored Robi Estrada from third, making it 4-3 in favor of Williamsport.

Roth and B.J. Rosenberg combined to shut down the Renegades, and Williamsport went on to win the first game 4-3. Roth moved to 7-0 on the season and Rosenberg picked up his 6th save=2 0of the year.

Although he picked up the loss, Dyer pitched fairly well. He kept the team in the game, tossing 5 innings, giving up 4 runs, while striking out five batters.

Tyree Hayes started the second game, facing off against Williamsport right-hander Michael Cisco, and both pitchers found themselves locked in a pitcher's duel. &nbs p; The Crosscutters scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning after Daniel Hargrave drove home Hanzawa on a slow roller to third.

Sean Grieve relieved Cisco in the fourth inning. Cisco, normally a reliever, was extremely effective tossing 3 2/3 innings, while striking out six.

Hudson Valley threatened in the home half of the fourth but Williamsport was able to escape a bases loaded jam after Grieve stuck his foot out and blocked a ball that was ticketed to centerfield. He gathered himself and threw out a hustling Mark Thomas at first base.

Josh Satow replaced Hayes in the sixth inning. Hayes pitched his best game of the year tossing 5 1/3 innings, only giving up five hits.

The ‘Gades threatened one more time in the bottom of the sixth but couldn't push across a run after loading the bases with one out.

Williamsport tacked on one more in the seventh to make it 2-0 and that was enough to put the Renegades away and complete the three-game sweep.

In other news...Jeremy Beckham, the brother of the Rays' number one overall pick Tim Beckham, started his first game since being called up from Princeton. He collected his first hit as a Renegade in the fifth inning and went 1-3 on the day.
