BROOKLYN, NY --- Brad Holt struckout 14 batters in six shutout innings and Eric Campbell went 4-for-4 with a three-run homer in the first inning as the Brooklyn Cyclones handed the Vermont Lake Monsters an 8-1 loss in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at KeySpan Park.

Holt allowed just two hits with two walks and the 14 strikeouts in his six innings for the victory. He had at least two strikeouts in each inning except for the third when he had a strikeout and double play. The final nine outs he recorded were by strikeout, including strikeouts to seven of the last eight batters he faced.

Brooklyn jumped out on top with four runs in the bottom of the first inning off Vermont starter Patrick Arnold (0-1), who was making his first appearance with the Lake Monsters after being promoted from the Gulf Coast League. Arnold walked the leadoff batter and then gave up back-to-back singles for a 1-0 Cyclones lead.

After a strikeout, Campbell hit the first pitch he saw from Arnold over the wall down the left-field line for a three-run homer and 4-0 Brooklyn advantage. Arnold was able to get out of further trouble until the third when his night ended after giving up a two-run double to Jose Jimenez.

The Cyclones added two more runs in the fourth off reliever Austin Garrett on a two-run homer from J.R. Voyles, while Vermont's only run of the night came in the seventh inning as Michael Guerrero led off with his sixth home run of the season. Guerrero finished the night with two of Vermont's four hits.

Along with Holt's 14 strikeouts, relievers Chris Schwinden and Wendy Rosa combined to strikeout four Lake Monsters. The 18 strikeouts overall for Vermont batters was one off the team record of 19 set on July 19, 2005 against Aberdeen, which included 15 strikeouts by Ironbird's starter Radhames Liz.

Along with the defeat, the Lake Monsters saw two starters leave the game with injuries. Third baseman Steve Souza came out with an apparent wrist injury after fouling a ball off during an at bat in the fourth inning, while second baseman Nick Arata left the game after colliding with center fielder Guerrero in the bottom of the seventh inning and sustaining a cut to his lip and nose.

The game was the final in a stretch with 17 of 22 games on the road for the Lake Monsters, who have played just five home games in the last 27 days. Vermont (18-16), which remains one game ahead of Oneonta for first-place in the Stedler Division, went 12-10 during the 22-game stretch.

The Lake Monsters now return home to historic Centennial Field for the next seven days as they host Lowell for four games and Brooklyn for a three-game series through July 31st. Ricardo Pecina is the scheduled starter for Vermont in the series opener with the Spinners on Friday night, which will include a post-game fireworks show.
