Reign Ground Condors with 2-1 Win

ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (9-6-1-0), proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, completed a two-game sweep of the Bakersfield Condors (5-13-2-0) before 3,900 at Citizen's Business Bank Arena on Sunday. Darcy Kuemper came within sixty-two seconds of his first professional shutout before Bakersfield defenseman Justin Pender scored on the power play - the only Condors power-play goal in nine opportunities.
The Reign jumped to an early lead on Matt Tassone's third power-play goal and fifth overall tally of the season at 5:39 of the first period. The rebound from Kyle Kraemer's point shot dropped in front of the Bakersfield net where Tassone fought off a check and backhanded the puck around Bryan Pitton. Pat Bowen also assisted on the goal.
The Condors thought they had gotten on the board in the third period, but Tyler Helfrich had tipped the puck in with a high stick and referee Nick Leduc waived it off immediately. J.D. Watt drew a tripping penalty and the Reign power-play unit came through again. The puck squirted to C.J. Stretch out of a corner scrum and Geoff Irwin one-timed a pass from his centerman just inside the right post at 7:00 for his seventh goal of the season.
With two Ontario players in the box, Bakersfield pulled Pitton for a 6-on-3 and Pender halved the Reign lead to 2-1 at 18:58. But it wasn't enough, as the Reign stood tough for the final minute to secure the 2-1 win.
Kuemper (7-1-0) stopped 33 of 34 shots for the win, while Pitton (2-8-1) took the loss with 39 saves on 41 shots.
