
Aces Fall to Grizzlies 3-2 in Shootout

The Aces extended their league-best point streak to seven games, but had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Utah Grizzlies at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, UT on Saturday night. The Aces record moved to 13-4-2, and Alaska has earned points in 10 of their last 11 games. Alaska has claimed 10 of a possible 12 points so far on their eight-game road swing. The Aces will now head back to Bakersfield on Friday and Saturday to finish their lengthy road trip. They return to the Sullivan Arena on December 7th. The opening period featured three different two-man advantages, however most of the frame was played scoreless. After Alaska and Utah both failed to convert on five-on-three chances, Utah received a second one with time winding down in the period, and this time they were able to break the scoreless tie. At 19:53 Matt Reber powered a shot from the right circle that trickled through Gerald Coleman, and into the net behind him to make it 1-0 Utah. The Grizzlies outshot the Aces 13-9 in the opening period.
Alaska turned the tide in the second period with a pair of goals to take the lead. Garry Nunn got it started with a wrist shot from the high slot at 2:57 to ties the score at 1-1. Chris Bruton then scored on a wraparound to extend his goal scoring streak to three games at 15:56, giving the Aces their first lead of the night. The Aces outshot the Grizzlies 9-7 in the period and took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
Mitch Fadden scored 1:44 into the third period to tie the score at 2-2, and force overtime. After a scores OT, Utah scored twice in the shootout to edge Alaska, whose only goal belonged to their first shooter, Dan Kissel. The Aces shootout loss snapped a stretch of 60 straight Aces wins when leading at second intermission, dating back to last season.
Gerald Coleman (11-3-1) took the shootout loss, making 30 saves on 32 shots, and Andrew Engelage (9-6) made 25 saves on 27 shots, earning the win. The Aces power play went 0-6, while the Grizzlies went 1-5. Alaska was outshot by Utah 33-27 in the game.
