Ontario Reign News Release
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Ontario Reign (10-6-0-2), four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, held on for a 4-3 win over the Colorado Eagles (9-5-0-0) in front of a crowd of 5,289 on Wednesday night at the Budweiser Events Center.
Ontario broke a scoreless tie in the first period when Ralfs Freibergs received a pass from Nolan Julseth-White and let a wrist shot fly that beat Eagles goaltender Doug Carr between the legs at 13:26. Maxim Kitsyn received the secondary assist on the goal.
The Reign extended the lead to two goals when Judd Blackwater was hauled down behind the Colorado net, but managed to deliver a pass back to the blueline for Matt Register, who blasted a shot past Carr at 15:44, with Tyler Spurgeon adding the secondary assist.
The Eagles got on the board late in the frame, when Brock Nixon blasted a shot off the rush to beat Jussi Olkinuora at 19:16.
In the second period, Ontario seized the opportunity during a five-on-three man advantage when Spurgeon passed the puck back to Register, who fired a slap shot from the blueline. Carr made the initial stop for the Eagles, but he left a rebound for Jeff May, who swooped in beneath the right circle and snapped the puck home at 3:21.
With Teigan Zahn still in the box for his delay of game penalty, Colorado countered with a shorthanded goal by Curtis Gedig at 4:00, with Trent Daavettila assisting.
The Eagles then tied the score at 3-3 after Nixon converted on a penalty shot, as he came down the right side with speed, and snapped the puck past Olkinuora's blocker at 10:22.
The Reign restored their lead on a delayed penalty, as Matt White sent a pass back to Register, who then used a head-fake to fool Carr before depositing the puck in the net and collecting his second of the night at 14:14, with Geoff Walker also getting credit for an assist.
In the third period, Olkinuora kept the Eagles at bay by making several brilliant saves, especially once Carr was pulled for an extra attacker.
Olkinuora earned the victory for Ontario with 27 saves; Carr took the defeat with 27 stops.
