Duluth, GA - Forward Wayne Simpson netted the game-winning goal on a breakaway in overtime to propel the South Carolina Stingrays (5-9-0-4) over the Gwinnett Gladiators (6-8-1-0) 3-2 at The Arena at Gwinnett Center Thanksgiving night.
The Gladiators jumped on the scoreboard first at 5:30 of the opening period when forward Anthony Perdicaro caught a drop pass from forward Garry Nunn at the top of the left-wing circle and blasted it over the glove of Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (W, 20 saves on 22 shots).
Stingrays forward Braden Pimm tied the contest 1:24 into the second period using a spin-o-rama to move past the defense and rip a shot past the glove of Gladiators goaltender Mark Guggenberger (OTL, 30 saves on 33 shors) from the top of the crease. Defenseman Drew MacKenzie and forward Andrew Cherniwchan picked up assists. The Gladiators reclaimed the lead moments later as forward Nathan Burns grabbed his second goal of the season at 11:49.
The Stingrays evened the contest late in the third period off a drive from forward Brandon Hynes along the right-wing boards beating Guggenberger past the right shoulder at 15:29. Forward Rob Bellamy added the lone assist. In the extra session, Simpson forced a turnover for a breakaway and capitalized at 1:02 for his fifth goal of the season to claim the victory.
