RedHawks Rally Late to Defeat Dogs

FARGO, N.D. - Wes Torrez turned in a solid start and Edwin Arroyo knocked in two runs as part of a multi-hit effort, but the Dogs fell late to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 7-4 at Newman Outdoor Field on Thursday afternoon.

Wes Torrez struck out five and gave up no walks in a solid start, followed by two shutout innings by Casey Crosby and Rich Mascheri, but the RedHawks got to Luke Wilkins (L, 1-1) for three runs in the eighth that proved to be the difference in the loss.

Early on, the Dogs struck first in the top of the third on a one-out single by Arroyo to score Gustavo Pierre, and Trey Vavra singled three pitches later to score David Olmedo-Barrera and take a 2-0 lead.

Chicago doubled up their lead on the RedHawks in the fifth inning. Arroyo hit a triple to drive in Rey Gonzalez, and Keon Barnum made it 4-0 with an RBI single that scored Arroyo.

In the bottom half of the frame, Fargo-Moorhead finally pierced Torrez with back-to-back doubles by Brennan Metzger and Tim Colwell for their first run of the afternoon, and pulled within one compliments of a Devan Ahart two-run shot.

The bottom of the eighth proved costly for the Dogs as the RedHawks struck for four runs, taking a 7-4 lead in an inning where Chicago committed two errors. Daniel Comstock singled with two runners on, allowing Leobaldo Pina to score on an error by Jordan Dean.

After taking second on a passed ball, Comstock scored on a single by Metzger along with Brian Olson, giving the RedHawks a two-run lead. One more run came across when Chris Jacobs reached on an Arroyo error, allowing Tim Colwell to score an unearned run.

Joe Filomeno (W, 6-0) followed RedHawks starter Sebastian Kessay for two shutout innings of relief and stifled any attempt at a Dogs comeback late.

The Dogs are back at home on Friday to start a weekend set against the St. Paul Saints. LHP Austin Wright (4-5) opens the series at Impact Field against RHP Benji Waite (1-1).
