TODAY'S OPPONENT:
The Memphis Redbirds are the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. They have been a member of the Pacific Coast League since 1998. Last season, the Redbirds finished third in the American North with a record of 58-86.
VS. MEMPHIS:
The RedHawks lead the season series 7-6. The RedHawks took three of four July 16-19 at Memphis. The Hawks took three of four April 13-16 at The Brick. The Redbirds took three of four to start the season at AutoZone Park April 5-8. Last season, the RedHawks won the season series 11-5.
TODAY'S GAME:
This is game 122 of the season, and the second of a 4-game series between Oklahoma and Memphis. This is the 14th of 16 meetings between the RedHawks and Redbirds this season.
LAST GAME:
The RedHawks dropped the first game of their series with Memphis, losing 1-0 last night. The Redbirds scored the only run of the game in the first inning. In his first at bat as a Redbird, Brian Barden drove home Skip Schumaker with a ground ball to third. The RedHawks failed to give starter Edinson Volquez any run support. Volquez pitched seven strong innings, striking out a RedHawk season-high 11 hitters. Tug Hulett and Guillermo Quiroz led the way for the RedHawks at the plate as they each had two doubles.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Chris Baker
gets the call for the RedHawks for the eighth time this season. He didn't figure in the decision Friday against Iowa, allowing four runs on seven in five innings. Last season with Round Rock, Baker was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two games, including one start, against the Redbirds. Mike Smith will go to the mound for the Redbirds. Smith is 1-1 with a 4.63 in starts against the RedHawks this season.
STRUGGLING AT THE BRICK:
Since June 27th, the RedHawks have had more success on the road than they have at The Brick, going 16-6 on the road and just 6-16 at home. The Hawks are on a season-low 7-game home losing streak, and they have lost nine of their last 10 at The Brick. The Hawks have a 5.29 ERA at home since June 27th compared to a 2.99 ERA on the road during that stretch.
OFFENSE LOOKING FOR RUNS:
The RedHawks have scored just 23 runs in their last nine games, going 2-7. The Hawks are hitting just .240 over the last nine games, and they have scored more than two runs in a game only three times during that stretch. The RedHawks were shut out for the seventh time this season last night.
FELDMAN GETS IT DONE IN RELIEF: Scott Feldman
hasn't allowed an earned run in his last six appearances out of the bullpen, dating back to Aug. 3. He has allowed just three hits while striking out five in 6.2 innings. Feldman threw two scoreless innings last night, striking out four Redbirds.
RELAFORD AT THE PLATE: Desi Relaford
failed to get a hit for just the second time in eight games last night. Since rejoining the RedHawks from Texas, he is hitting .379 (11-29) with a homer and four RBIs. Relaford has started six games at second and two at DH after playing mostly third base in 63 games during his first stint with the RedHawks.
LEAGUE LEADERS: Freddy Guzman
leads the league with 42 stolen bases. Tug Hulett is fourth with 83 runs scored.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
The RedHawks are 10-3 on Wednesday this season...the 7-game home losing streak in the the third longest streak in Hawks history. A 9-game streak 6/17-25/05 is the longest losing streak at The Brick...the RedHawks have lost four of their last five home series...the RedHawks have at least one extra-base hit in 16 straight games...
