Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Salt Lake City, UT - Kendry Morales lined a single to left in the bottom of the 12th inning to score Casey Smith and give the Salt Lake Bees a 5-4 win over the Sidewinders on Tuesday night. The loss drops Tucson seven games out of first place with just 20 games remaining.

Mike Schultz allowed back to back singles to Smith and Brandon Wood to open the 12th before Morales sent his 2-2 pitch down the left field line and into the corner for the game winner. Schultz had escaped trouble in the 11th when Robby Hammock's sliding stop of Nick Gorneault's sharp ground ball to first stranded two men on base.

The Sidewinders trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning but scored three times to tie it. Jeff Salazar and Alberto Callaspo had RBI singles and Alex Romero's ground out plated the tying run.

Each team had opportunities to win the game earlier but could not convert. Nick Gorneault was thrown out by Rich Thompson trying to score from second on Casey Smith's base hit in the bottom of the ninth. In the 10th, Jared Ball drilled a one out triple to center but Jamie D'Antona popped up to shallow center field and Brandon Wood's diving stab on Robby Hammock's ground ball turned Tucson away.

Steven Shell worked the final two innings for his sixth win of the season.

Matt Erickson went 1-2 with three walks to extend his hitting streak to 18.

The Sidewinders and Bees play game three of their series on Wednesday night at Franklin Covey Field. Left-hander Bill Murphy (2-3, 3.69) starts for Tucson against right-hander Pedro Liriano (4-11, 5.54) for Salt Lake. First pitch is at 6:05 Tucson time. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:00.
