Despite Dubious Distinction, Grizzlies Set To Honor Arvin, CA

Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, CA- Residents of Arvin, CA, know that the small, tranquil farming community they call home has been put on the map for reasons beyond their control. Arvin was recently named the smoggiest city in America according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Although Arvin, located 20 miles southeast of Bakersfield, does not produce much pollution, the nearby mountains trap the pollution from cities such as Bakersfield, San Francisco and even Fresno as it lies downwind of most cities in the Valley. Therefore, the Fresno Grizzlies will present "Save Arvin Night" this Thursday, honoring Arvin and highlighting the positive things that it brings to the state.

On Thursday, August 16th the Grizzlies will highlight all that Arvin has to offer with video board tributes, on-field contests and Arvin trivia. Arvin City Manager Alan Christianson will be on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the start of the game. All residents of Arvin are invited to make the trip to Fresno for the festivities and will receive a free ticket to the game.

"The Garden in the Sun", as Arvin is known, is most notably remembered for the "Sunset Labor Camp" which John Steinbeck made famous in his famous novel "The Grapes of Wrath". This farming community is known for its agricultural-based economy and is home to Grimmway Farms, the largest producer of carrots in the world. Incorporated in 1960, Arvin offers quiet residential areas, clean streets, a low-crime rate and a well kept City Hall.

"Save Arvin Night" festivities will be held during the second game of Thursday's scheduled doubleheader between the Tacoma Rainiers, Triple A-Affiliate of the Seattle Mariners and the Fresno Grizzlies. First pitch of the first game is set for 6:05 pm. The second game will begin 20 minutes following the end of the first game. Thursday will also mark the final 104.1 FM Thirsty Thursday of the season, as 12 oz. draft beers will be just $1 throughout the first seven inning game of the doubleheader, while 12 oz. sodas will be $1 the entire night.

The Grizzlies full promotional schedule for the remainder of the 2007 season is available at www.fresnogrizzlies.com. Tickets for all home games are on sale now at the Chukchansi Park ticket office, over the phone at (559) 320-TIXS or online at fresnogrizzlies.com.
