Today's Game: After a 3-5 homestand, the RedHawks will head to Albuquerque for a brief four-game road trip starting tonight at 8:05 p.m. Last season the RedHawks were just 2-6 at Isotopes Park.
Last Game: The RedHawks used a nice outing from the pitching staff and a couple of big run-scoring triples from Jonathan Villar and Trevor Crowe in a 5-2 win over Round Rock. Villar collected two extra-base hits and put the RedHawks on the board with an RBI triple in the second inning. Crowe later brokea 1-1 tie in the fifth with a two-run triple. Jordan Lyles allowed one run over 4.2 innings before reaching his pitch count. The trio of C.J. Fick (W, 1-0), Kyle Hallock and Josh Zeid (SV, 1) held the Express to one run and two hits over the final 4.1 innings.
Today's Probable Pitchers: Jarred Cosart will look to keep his strong start to the season going...Cosart has allowed just one run over his first three outings and has now allowed a run in 11.2 consecutive innings...HIs 0.71 ERA is fourth-best in the PCL and he ranks third inn opponent batting average (.159) and fourth in WHIP (0.95)...Through his first three outings, Cosart has done a great job keeping the ball on the ground, averaging over six groundouts for every flyout...He followed Wes Musick on Monday against Memphis, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings before reaching his pitch limit...In nine Triple-A appearances (seven starts), Cosart has posted a 2.01 ERA and limited hitters to a .223 average.
Wes Musick will follow Cosart...he made his first start of the season Monday and held Memphis scoreless over five innings in an 11-0 victory...Musick gave up just two hits and none after the first inning, retiring the final 11 batters he faced...After a rough season debut, Musick has allowed just one run and three hits over his last two appearances, spanning eight innings (opponents are 3-for-27)...Musick's one prior game against the Isotopes came last May 26 in Albuquerque...During that outing he allowed a career-high 11 hits (seven doubles) and tied a career high with six runs.
Against the Isotopes: 2013: 0-0 2012: 7-9 All-time: 82-77 In ALB: 35-45
The final tally of the 2012 season series is a bit misleading...Albuquerque won three of four in each of the first three series...Needing a sweep to keep their playoff hopes alive, the RedHawks took all four from the Isotopes in the second-to-last series of the regular season...The Albuquerque offense was hard to stop last year, as the Isotopes hit .320, bashed 19 home runs, and averaged 5.8 runs per game...Former RedHawk Brad Snyder did most of the work for OKC last year, hitting .400 with two homers and 13 RBIs...The RedHawks have lost the season series with Albuquerque in three of the last four seasons.
Opening Acts: The RedHawks are 0-4 in series openers this season. However, after last night, they are now 4-0 in series finales.
Dynamic Duo: The last two times Jarred Cosart and Wes Musick have pitched in tandem they have held the opposition to one run and seven hits over 16.2 innings. After combining to retire 16 straight against Nashville on April 10, they combined to retire 14 straight Memphis hitters on Monday.
New Crowe Medicine Show: After going hitless in the first two games of the season, Trevor Crowe has hit safely in each of the last 13 games (.373, 19x51), tying him with Corey Dickerson of Colorado Springs for the longest streak in the PCL this season. It's also the longest hit streak of his career since an 18-game streak May 25-July 16, 2009 with the Columbus Clippers. He and Jake Elmore are the only teammates in the PCL this season to each have hit streaks of 10 games or longer. Going back to last season while playing for Salt Lake, Crowe has reached base safely in 36 consecutive games in the PCL. The current streak started against the RedHawks on Aug. 7.
Heckuva Homestand: Marc Krauss hit safely in each of the eight games of the homestand (.423, 11x26). Even more impressively, Krauss racked up 13 RBI in Oklahoma City, driving in at least one run in six times. In five of the eight games he had at least two RBI. He has catapulted to the team lead with 16 RBI, which is also fifth in the PCL. Last night in his only plate appearance with a runner on base, Krauss was intentionally walked.
Jake Takes the Cake: Jake Elmore has hit safely 13 of 15 contests and has reached base safely at least once every game. His .397 average currently ranks fifth in the league. Last season Elmore recorded a PCL-best 31-game hitting streak and 46-game on-base streak while playing with Reno.
Valiant Villar: After getting off to a 2-for-34 start, Jonathan Villar is 8-for-20 over his last five games, with three multi-hit efforts. During this stretch he has collected all three of his RBI and all four of his extra-base hits for the season.
Twice as Nice: The RedHawks turned eight double plays in the Round Rock series and have turned two at least twice in each of the last three games. Their 20 double plays for the season are tied for fourth in the PCL.
Power Outage: The RedHawks have not homered in six straight games and are tied with New Orleans for the least homers in the PCL with eight. The last time they were held at least six straight games without a home run was Aug. 10-19, 2011 (9 games).
