Sky Sox' Rally Falls Short, Lose to 51s 10-6

For the first time this season the Colorado Springs Sky Sox allowed a run in the first inning and fell to the Las Vegas 51s, 10-6, on Saturday evening at Security Service Field.

The 51s got on the board first when Zach Lutz singled home third baseman Reese Havens. With two men on Jamie Hoffmann hit a two-run double off of starting pitcher Aaron Cook (L, 0-2) to take the early 3-0 lead.

Las Vegas pitcher Chris Schwinden(W, 2-2) held the Sky Sox bats in check for three innings and did not allow a run until the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Wheeler singled with one out and then reached second on a throwing error by Schwinden. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Tyler Colvin and Charlie Culberson brought the Sox within one run, 3-2.

After giving up three runs in the first Cook settled down and held the 51s scoreless for four consecutive innings. The 51s' bats heated up again in the top of the sixth when Wilmer Flores hit a single to lead off the inning and Hoffmann added a single of his own two at-bats later. With Juan Centeno batting, both runners advanced on a wild pitch and then were brought home on a Centeno single. Colorado Springs' pitcher Jeff Manship came on to relieve Cook, but gave up a double to make it 7-2 51s.

The Sky Sox began to claw back into the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Manship to bring home Ryan Wheeler. In the seventh, reliever Gonzalez German walked DJ LeMahieu to begin the inning. After a coaching visit to the mound Charlie Blackmon doubled on a ball to right fielder Andrew Brown to put runners on second and third with no outs.

After a Nolan Arenado strikeout, pitcher Sean Henn came in and threw a wild pitch which brought home LeMahieu and sent Blackmon to third. With one out R. Wheeler singled in Blackmon for his 15th RBI of the season to cut the deficit to two. Later in the inning the Sky Sox recorded their 44th 2-out RBI of the season on a Lars Davis single to plate Colvin.

Colorado Springs' streak of four-unanswered runs ended in the top of the eighth when a Manship wild pitch brought home Hoffmann who led off the inning with a single. Las Vegas added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth and the Sky Sox were unable to rally in the bottom of the inning and suffered their eighth loss of the year.

The two teams will return to action tomorrow for an afternoon matinee which is scheduled to begin at 1:35pm. Left-hander Christian Friedrich (0-1, 3.60) is looking for his first win of the year and will face off against Las Vegas righty Colin McHugh (2-0, 0.50).
