Iowa Cubs News Release

Memphis, TN - INF Brent Lillibridge joins the Iowa Cubs today and will be active for tonight's game against the Memphis Redbirds at Auto Zone Park. The Chicago Cubs designated Lillibridge for assignment on April 16, he cleared waivers, and accepted his outright assignment to the minor leagues. The Cubs also placed I-Cubs IF Tim Torres on the disabled list today.

The Cubs signed Lillibridge as a minor league free agent on January 29 and he made Chicago's Opening Day roster as a non-roster invitee to spring training. In his nine games with Chicago this season, Lillibridge was 1-for-24 while playing both third base and second base. The Pittsburgh Pirates originally drafted Lillibridge in the fourth round of the 2005 draft out of the University of Washington. He was traded to the Atlanta Braves with P Mike Gonzalez for 1B Adam LaRoche and OF Jamie Romak in January, 2007, and made his major league debut with the Braves in 2008. Following the 2008 season, he was dealt to the Chicago White Sox in a five-player deal that also sent C Tyler Flowers to Chicago and P Javier Vazquez to Atlanta. Last season, the White Sox traded Lillibridge to Boston with P Zach Stewart for IF Kevin Youkilis in June and the Red Sox turned around and dealt him to the Cleveland Indians for P Jose De La Torre in July. Entering this season, Lillibridge had a .213 (138-for-649) career average with 19 home runs and 66 RBI in 338 big league games.

Torres is 1-for-8 in five games with Iowa since returning from double-A Tennessee on April 12. He has a left calf strain. The Cubs signed Torres as a minor league free agent in February.

The Cubs open a four-game series at Auto Zone Park tonight. LH Chris Rusin (1-1, 3.50) will be on the mound for Iowa against LH Nick Additon (0-1, 7.00) for the Redbirds. Game time is 6:05. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:45.
